The Weight

A housing estate in Poland, 1980s. A man in his late sixties lives alone in a flat no one visits. His days are orderly and empty: the radio, tea, the window. He has outlived the people who knew him and the work that gave his name a use. Nobody checks on him, and nothing about this strikes anyone as unusual.
One morning he opens the window and jumps. Several floors below, a neighbour steps out with her dog at that exact moment. He lands on her. The film never resolves who survived what happened.
What follows is a hospital bed, an interrogation, strangers asking questions. Corridors, forms, a uniform in the doorway. People who have never spoken to him now need him to explain himself, and the language available to them — accident, intent, responsibility — does not fit anything he could say.
And the dog. The only presence on both sides of that morning: first on the stairs, then in the corridor. The link between two people who never exchanged a word and are now bound together in a single second.
All his life the man went unnoticed. Now he becomes the subject of a procedure: a dressing, a statement, a ruling. The attention he never had arrives in this form alone — as a case to be closed. The concern directed at him is real and entirely procedural; it will end when the file does.
Ciężar does not resolve what it is we are actually watching. What remains is the portrait of a man cut off from others for so long that his presence and his absence have stopped being different things.
